Just doing my part to warn readers: buyer beware. In the age of sock puppetry and fake reviews, we have scam artists on Amazon who mimic (that’s the only word I can think of) a bestselling author’s name…to dupe readers. I ran across this title, Gunshots by Michael Connolly the other day. It was released on July 4, 2013 by Createspace Independent platform, whatever that is. This author is allegedly trying to take advantage of readers by riffing off the name of Michael Connelly who is a bestselling mystery writer. This isn’t the only time I’ve seen this happen. A few months ago while browsing for Victoria Holt novels, I ran across this author who went by Victoria L. Holt but has since shortened the name to V.L. Holt to cause less confusion for readers (yeah, right)
You can easily be duped if you don’t pay attention and do a little research. But wait: why are readers having to do research? It’s the world we live in folks. I admit that some of these writers made me look twice but I know Michael Connelly’s covers don’t look anything like that and as far I know he hasn’t self-published anything either. Whoever these writers are that are doing this are taking advantage of readers and causing confusion. These types of scams are nothing new. What’s surprising to me is how many people are falling for them. It’s a crazy world out there kids. Be careful. Oh yeah and who in the hell is Jim Cunningham? who gave the cover quote for this novel? Blech.
