I will be on vacation beginning Thursday due to a much needed rest for two weeks. Help me pick some good reading material! I have an extensive list of books and an ebook reader so, the titles I’ve listed are just off the top. I started this blog because I am interested in reading crime fiction and I want to highlight some good books. I average about 42 hits per day here so if you are just passing through, can you please either recommend a good mystery to read or vote for a title in my poll? Thanks! The poll is open for one day only and you can only vote for one book (updated, poll doesn’t allow more than one choice, sorry!). Appreciate your help.
I’d read “tainted blood” as well.
“Still life”…. is it the first?? I’ve read some of them off and on. They’re IMO ‘ok’, other’s claim they are wonderful. They remind me of cozy’s (which I find annoying) b/c the mysteries are all in and around one town and it’s inhabitants. How many murder’s can a village have??
“In the woods” is a love or hate book. I didn’t hate it but it wasn’t a fav. Reading your blog I think you’d probably enjoy it. I’m realistic in knowing what I like, other’s may not, and vise versa.
I have been on a paranormal kick lately and have discovered I like about 1/10 of what is out there…. I like mine “fluffy” – Singh, Laurenston/Aiken, Andrews. I have put a lot of your recs on my goodreads tbr… time for a change… I haven’t read mysteries in a while and I enjoy them.
I did something wrong with my poll. I wanted to vote for both ‘The Redbreast’ by Jo Nesbo and ‘Murder in a Mill Town’ by P.B. Ryan.
I’ve been hearing good things about Tana French for a while now but I haven’t read her books yet.
Enjoy your vacation!
@SarahT I just updated the post. The poll only allows one answer choice. How boring.
@farmwifetwo – I’ve seen the mixed responses on Tana French. I am curious to know if I will like her and yes, “Still Life” is the first book in the mystery series by Louise Penny and you have it pegged right, it’s a cozy. I like cozy mysteries if they are like Julia Spencer-Fleming and the first book in that series is In The Bleak Midwinter. Good stuff.
I have sought refuge in mysteries while romance enjoys it’s paranormal revolution right now. To be fair, I have enjoyed Meljean Brook and have Illona Andrews in my stacks.
Have a great vacation and happy reading. On my to-be-read shelf at the moment are: “Black Water Rising” by Attica Locke and “The Darkest Room” by Johan Theorin. I presume you’ve already read the CJ Sansom series about Matthew Shardlake and Henning Mankell’s Kurt Wallander books?
@Trish I’ve been pimping the C.J. Sansom series to Keishon for a while now. I’m waiting for her to bite.
*gasps* You haven’t read The Redbreast yet?
I think you know what I’m going to recommend (besides my vote for The Redbreast). Arnaldur Indridason, Colin Cotterill, Deon Meyer (especially Blood Safari), Malla Nunn.
re: Tana French, she lost me about halfway into In the Woods and I couldn’t get into The Likeness, but I’m still willing to give her new book a try, even though I’d have given up on most other authors by this point. Anyway, since In the Woods is about missing children, another recommendation: Carol O’Connell’s Judas Child.
Thank You! Everybody. Yes, Sarah I will read C.J. Sansom!
@Trisha – just got the Deon Meyer and I have two titles by Malla Nunn. Interested to see how I like Tana French. Reader reaction to her books are mixed.
I voted for Nesbo, but heck, take ‘em all!
Enjoy your vacation Keishon. I voted for the Nesbo book because I have just finished it and am now waiting for the next in the series from the library. You have me made another fan of Harry Hole. I have in my TBR pile 2 books by authors recommended by you (Karin Fossum and Johan Theorin) and the first book in a series by Charles Todd (American mother and son team I think). It features Inspector Ian Rutledge a veteran of World War 1 and the first book is set in 1919. I too am discovering a real enjoyment of historical mysteries and also love the C.J Sansom books. I have listened to the first two on audiobook read by Christian Rodska – just love his voice. I then bought all 4 books.
I know you’re on vacation, but I finished a book last night and immediately thought you might like it. It’s not amazing on the level of, say, Jo Nesbo, but it was a solid B read. Book is called Presumed Dead by Shirley Wells and I got it from Carina Press.
Hope you’re having a fun break!
@Kaytee – so glad that Nesbo worked out for you! I plan to tackle Fossum next. I did read some new authors and will post reviews as soon as I can.
@Lynn – I bought the Wells book, “Presumed Dead” and can’t wait to tackle it. Thanks for the heads up.
